Veteran and new Ghostbusters join forces in New York to save the world from a second ice age after the discovery of an ancient artefact unleashes an evil force. The film is a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and marks the fifth installment in the Ghostbusters franchise. When people are dead, they come back as ghosts. When hit movies are dead, they come back as sequels.
The problem with “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” isn’t that it’s terrible, but rather that it’s adequate but dead, a full 40 years past any inspiration or reason for being. What started off as an excuse to throw together a handful of young, funny guys has become a big mess with a sprawling cast of actors flailing for laughs that aren’t there.
To its credit, the movie doesn’t try to fill the holes with lots of action. By the standards of most action movies, “Frozen Empire” is a sedate affair, with very little ghost-busting and lots of talking about it. There is an actual story here, but it involves too many people, and it isn’t that interesting.
The sequel brings back the cast of 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which had a good title in that it all but admitted that the series had been deceased for a long time. Here, as in the previous film, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon head a ghost-busting family, the Spenglers, with the help of Mom’s teenage children from another marriage.
The real ghost-busting talent in the family is Mckenna Grace as Phoebe, but because she’s underage, the city of New York prohibits her from fighting ghosts. With nothing to do, Phoebe makes friends with a ghost her own age (Emily Alyn Lind), a development that may lead to disaster.
The screenplay, written by director Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman (his father, Ivan Reitman, co-wrote and directed the original 1984 “Ghostbusters”), drags in a succession of characters. Patton Oswalt shows up as an expert in ancient artifacts, and Dan Aykroyd returns as Ray, who runs a curio shop. One day, a man named Nadeem walks into the shop, hoping to sell some trinkets left to him by his grandmother. What he doesn’t know is that the metal orb that he’s willing to let go for $50 holds captive the soul of an ancient evil spirit with the power to freeze the entire Earth and kill everybody.
