The infamous and rather odd ‘Chappa’ system that was practised at the Mattancherry harbour in Cochin during the 40s and 50s had dock bosses throw metal coins into a crowd of labourers, who would then hustle to pick one in order to win work for the day. The struggles of the workers finally led to protests that resulted in a police firing that killed three labourers. The film shows the story from two opposing sides the bosses and the workers.
